Interview Preparation - 5 Easy Steps For Success
Prepare with a plan, practice with intent, perform with confidence.

Got 60 seconds? Do this

  • Skim the job ad and highlight 3 must-have skills.
  • Pick 2 STAR stories that match those skills.
  • Write your 30 second intro: Present → Past → Future.
  • Prepare 2 questions: one about success metrics, one about the team.

Interviews can feel uncomfortable. The good news is that performance improves quickly when you prepare with a clear structure and practice out loud. Use the five steps below and lean on our free Career Centre resources to make your next interview your best one yet.

Students at The Career Academy IE get complimentary access to the Career Centre for templates, CV checks, and interview coaching tips.

1) Build a professional CV that matches the role

Your CV gets you in the room. Keep it focused, easy to scan, and aligned to the job description.

  • Put contact details at the top and ensure your LinkedIn link works.
  • Use a short profile that states your target role and top 2 or 3 strengths.
  • Under each job, list 3 or 4 achievements with measurable outcomes.
  • Mirror the employer’s keywords for skills and tools where they match your experience.

Tip: Save as PDF with a clear file name like Firstname-Lastname-CV.pdf.

For deeper polish, build communication confidence with Management courses.

2) Research the company and the job

Ten minutes of focused research helps you tailor answers and ask smart questions.

  • What they do and who they serve. One current news item or project.
  • The role scope. Top three responsibilities and success measures.
  • Your value add. Two examples that match their needs.

Bring one question about the team and one about how success is measured.

3) Practice STAR answers for common questions

Use STAR to keep answers clear and relevant.

  • Situation. Brief context.
  • Task. Your responsibility.
  • Action. What you did.
  • Result. Outcome with numbers where possible.

Example: When our clinic had a 2 week backlog (S), I owned the appointment triage (T), created a priority list and added evening slots (A), cutting backlog to 3 days in one week (R).

Sharpen your communication and leadership edge with Management courses.

4) Set up for success on the day

  • Online: Quiet space, neutral background, stable internet, working camera and mic.
  • In person: Plan your route, arrive 10 to 15 minutes early.
  • Dress one step above the everyday dress code. Full outfit helps you feel prepared.
  • Bring your CV, the job ad, and your question list. Keep water nearby.

5) Close strong and follow up

  • Thank the interviewer and restate your interest.
  • Send a short thank you email within 24 hours. Mention one topic from the conversation and how you can add value.
  • If you do not hear back by the timeframe given, send a polite status check.
