Dog Psychology, Behaviour & Training​ Course Guide

This course will provide an introduction to the relevance of understanding canine psychology and how canine animals think. It will include but not be limited to the evolution of wolves to dogs, why early humans domesticated wolves, the roles that dogs now fulfil in society and the social behaviour of wolves.

This course will provide an overview of the various ways that canine animals communicate and will include but not be limited to how to interpret canine body language, key facts regarding a dog’s sense of smell and the meaning of a dog’s urination behaviour.

This course will provide an introduction to natural canine behaviours and basic requirements, including but not limited to the importance of the main components of food, key facts regarding health issues in dogs and sexual behaviour of dogs, and how to develop an exercise plan for a dog.

This course will provide an introduction to how dogs develop behavioural characteristics throughout the stages of their life. It will include but not be limited the importance of developmental periods, the importance of play and the ways a puppy can be socialised.

This course will provide an overview of commonly occurring behavioural problems in dogs and will include but not be limited to the importance of physical and mental stimulation, different types of aggression and appropriate treatments for behavioural disorders.

This course will provide an introduction to the basic principles on which dog training is based and how this translates to training a dog. It will include but not be limited to how conditioning works, key facts regarding socialisation and basic training, and how to formulate a behavioural modification plan.

This course will explore the various ways a dog can be trained to perform predetermined actions upon command, and will include but not be limited to the importance of obedience training, how commands can be taught to a dog and key facts regarding the basic concepts behind obedience training.

This course will provide an introduction to the movement of dogs and how it can be controlled, both through training and other methods. It will include but not be limited to reasons why a dog may escape and changes that can be made to prevent a dog from escaping.

This course will explore the different ways a dog can be trained to perform tasks required as a working dog and will include but not be limited to the importance of working dogs and how a working dog can be trained.
